Some places invite you to pause, not because they ask you to, but because they make it impossible not to. Hyll is one of those places. Hidden in the North Cotswolds, this 14th-century manor feels more like a home than a hotel \u2014 a house that has lived many lives and welcomes you as if you’ve been here before. From the moment we turned into the long, tree-lined driveway, with its spectacular approach and grand entrance, it was clear we’d arrived somewhere special.<\/p>\n

Inside, the atmosphere is unhurried and comforting. The team at Hyll are genuinely lovely \u2014 warm, attentive and effortlessly professional. From our very first hello, we were looked after as if we were old friends returning. Our room was beautifully comfortable, with thoughtful touches everywhere: buttery homemade biscuits left on the tray, a well-stocked mini bar with everything you could need, and soft lighting that made the old stone walls glow in the evening.<\/p>\n

Dinner that night was outstanding. Each dish was simple but perfectly done \u2014 the sort of food that makes you slow down and savour every bite. The staff were especially wonderful with our little boy, always taking the time to chat with him and make him feel part of the occasion. It’s a rare thing to find a place that feels so refined yet so relaxed and family-friendly.<\/p>\n

After dinner, we wandered through the house, discovering a series of cosy lounges where you can settle in with a book, listen to music, or just watch the world go by. One room has a vinyl record player and tables full of old records \u2014 we spent a peaceful hour there, sipping a nightcap while something mellow played in the background. It’s those little touches that make Hyll feel so different from a typical hotel; it feels like a home that happens to have impeccable taste.<\/p>\n

Breakfast the next morning was just as lovely, with fresh pastries, eggs made to order, and good, strong coffee served without hurry. Later, we explored the grounds, where there’s plenty of outdoor seating, a couple of garden games, and views that stop you in your tracks. Sitting there with a cold glass of wine, looking out over the rolling Cotswold hills, I felt that rare sense of stillness that’s so hard to find in everyday life.<\/p>\n

Hyll isn’t about doing more \u2014 it’s about doing less, and doing it well. No set itinerary, no need to rush or explain why you’re still in your bathrobe at noon. Just a beautiful old house built for slowing down.<\/p>\n

We left reluctantly, feeling rested, full, and quietly happy. Hyll is more than a place to stay \u2014 it’s a place to exhale. I couldn’t fault a single thing.<\/p>\n

And if you do feel like venturing beyond those old stone walls, there’s plenty to explore nearby. The picture-perfect villages of Stow-on-the-Wold and Broadway are just a short drive away, with their independent shops, galleries and cosy tearooms. The Cotswold Way offers miles of walking trails right on the doorstep, winding through meadows and ancient woodland. For something a little different, the gardens at Hidcote or the market town of Chipping Campden make lovely afternoon outings. But truthfully, once you’ve settled into the rhythm of Hyll, you may find you don’t want to go anywhere at all.<\/p>\n
